LIST OF TITLES

The list of titles contains titles recommended by the project board. It is meant to be help in selecting titles for translation, however, publishers may apply with titles of their own choice. The list can be found at www.osi.hu/cpd/womenlist.html.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING APPLICATIONS

The board of the project will evaluate the applications taking into consideration the following factors:

availability of books on the issues covered by the competition in a given country
title chosen
business aspect of the proposal
quality of the publisher
quality of the translator

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

The grants will support publication of translations of books related to women's health, violence against women and girls issues (not including fiction, books for NGOs, or guidebooks and handbooks); translations must be into one of the languages of the countries listed above.

Applications are accepted only from publishers in these countries, and grants are paid directly to the publisher; translators or NGOs seeking support for a project should find a suitable publisher to make the application (the publishing coordinator of the local Soros foundation can be asked for advice on this).

Grant requests should not exceed $5000, and publication is expected within 24 months.

Publishers applying for these grants should have published at least two related titles published in the past year.

Translations already supported by another funding source of the Soros Foundations/Open Society Institute network (for example, the CEU Translation Project or a publishing support program of a national Soros Foundation) are not eligible for these grants.

The grants do not cover 100% of translation and publication costs; publishers are expected to invest some of their own resources in the project, and to recoup their investment through book sales; the grant is intended to offset losses that the publication may incur.

Publishers should report all other subsidies and grants for the publication, and the grant requested from OSI should reflect any such additional support.

Once a grant application is approved, OSI will prepare a contract and mail it to the grantee; the contract requires the publisher to commit to the publication deadline and the minimum print run specified in the application.

For translations of contemporary texts which are under copyright protection, payment of the grant is contingent upon the publisher obtaining written permission for the translation from the copyright holder, and providing OSI with a copy of the contract or letter of permission (we request that all publishers adhere to a copyright protection term of at least 70 years after the author's death).

Grants are paid in two installments, 50% upon completion of the translation, and 50% upon publication; OSI reserves the right to verify independently the accuracy of the translation and to withhold the grant if the translation is substandard.

Grant payments are denominated in US dollars and are made directly to the publisher's bank account.

All applicants will be informed of the selection committee's decision by 30 July 1999.
