Warsaw International Summer Education (WISE 2000)is a program of lectures, seminars, and discussions organized by Warsaw University during July and August and is open to all who would like to learn more about the complex transformation in Polish society and culture that has taken place over the last 10 years. The courses cover a wide range of topics and all of them are in English. The instructors are eminent social psychologists, sociologists, political scientists, and economists from Poland and elsewhere who have studied and written about the new Poland and the transition from communism to democracy. The courses are open to all students and older adults regardless of their background or training (only one of our offerings, Monitoring Social Change, since it uses survey data to compare attitudes in Poland with those in the United States and other nations, recommends those taking it have an interest in learning to analyze this sort of data). Finally, I should note that the program will offer several sightseeing trips in Warsaw and its environs plus a variety of tours to places such as Cracow, Gdansk, and Zakopane as well as to some fascinating but lesser known sites such as Wieliczka with its extraordinary salt mines. In the evening there are not only a fine Polish cinema culture -- most of the films have English subtitles -- but also a lively nightlife with interesting cafes, jazz clubs, and concerts.
