One-Year Internship In Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Description: This is a one year full-time opportunity in our Tashkent location for recent undergraduates with a strong interest in a future career in international human rights. The intern will provide HRW's Tashkent-based representative with logistical, administrative and clerical assistance while enjoying close supervision by HRW staff and gaining valuable exposure to the workings of this international human rights organization.
He or she will have the opportunity to assist HRW's Tashkent representative with all of the research and monitoring activities of the office, including interaction with other U.S. and international organizations, local officials, and visiting foreign delegations; accompanying the Tashkent representative to meetings with government officials and the diplomatic community; accompanying the Tashkent representative on fact-finding missions in the field in order to interview and receive complaints from human rights victims, take testimony, and collect other evidence of human rights abuses; and attending and taking notes at trials. The intern will be responsible for maintaining files, contact lists, and a database of political prisoners; maintaining communication among HRW's Tashkent and international offices; drafting correspondence, responding to requests for information, and distributing publications such as press releases and reports; preparing for and taking minutes at meetings; assisting with travel arrangements and followup; and occasional translating.
Requirements: Candidates must be self-motivated, extremely well-organized, collegial, and able to function under pressure in a difficult environment. Russian or Uzbek language skills are essential; office experience and computer literacy is important; an undergraduate degree in International Relations and/or relevant regional study or experience is desirable.
Stipend and Benefits: There is a $15,000 annual stipend for this position. HRW will provide a benefits package which includes 20 days vacation per year; employer-paid medical, dental, and life insurance; and one additional roundtrip airfare for purposes of home leave.
