Youth Expedition for the Preservation of Wilderness and Cross-Cultural Understanding
Altai Mountains, Southern Siberia,Russia
July 10 - August 6, 1999Take part in a Joint US-Russian Student Expedition to the Altai Mountains of Southern Siberia! Sacred Earth Network and Raven Adventures invite US high school and college students to travel with us to Southern Siberia. There, we will join Russian students and their leaders on an environmental awareness and outdoor leadership educational program trekking through the remote and exquisite wilderness near the borders of Mongolia and China.
During this 3 1/2 week expedition, students will learn about the ancient Altai cultures and unique and diverse ecosystems where endangered species such as the Snow Leopard and Argali Sheep still roam. They will also be trained in minimum impact camping, orienteering, animal tracking, and other skills, and there will be group-building and personal growth exercises. Our focus throughout the program will be on how we, as humans, interact with our environment and how we can work together to protect the world's last remaining wilderness areas. After the trek, Russian and US students will participate in a service project at a protected area, and they will publicize their efforts and conservation issues they learn about when they return home.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
* Participate in a Russian nature conservation initiative
* Learn about the ecology and ancient cultures of the area
* Hike across high mountain passes, glaciers, and green alpine valleys
* Gain outdoor leadership and safety skills
* Live with a Russian family
* Ride the Trans-Siberian Railroad
This expedition is the joint effort of two US and two Russian non-profit environmental organizations: Sacred Earth Network, the Global Classroom, Altai State University Ecology Club and Novosibirsk State University Ecology Club.
Cost: $2000 (Includes airfare from New York)
