Visiting Professorship, Health and Social Policy in
Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union

The Center for Russian and East European Studies (CREES) at the University of Michigan anticipates funding to support a Visiting Professorship for the 2001-02 academic year. Individuals are sought whose research and teaching relates to issues of health and social policy in Eastern Europe and/or the former Soviet Union. The appointment would be held jointly between CREES and one or more professional schools at the University of Michigan, such as Business, Natural Resources and Environment, Nursing, Public Health, Public Health, and Social Work. An offer would be contingent on the evaluation and approval of CREES and of the relevant professional school(s).

The position would entail teaching one graduate-level core or elective professional school course and one undergraduate course. The successful applicant would be expected to contribute to discussions and planning for strengthening collaboration between CREES and professional schools in the area of health and social policy.

Each finalist will be invited to the University of Michigan to give a colloquium during 2000-01. This colloquium will be widely advertised and will provide an opportunity for general discussion of the scholar's work and the connections between professional and disciplinary concerns and area studies and contextual concerns. Each finalist will also meet with various groups of faculty, students, and staff.

Applicants may be from the United States or from other countries. Applicants may be recent recipients of a Ph.D. or professional degree or more senior scholars, including those planning a sabbatical. Invitations to present a colloquium and the offer of a visiting professorship will be based on the relevance of the applicant's work and interests to issues of health and social policy in Eastern Europe and/or the former Soviet Union, the quality and potential of the scholar's work, the ability of the scholar to contribute to the strengthening of ties between Russian and Eastern European Studies and professional schools, and experience and ability to teach relevant courses.

Applicants should send: (1) a letter of application; (2) curriculum vitae; (3) samples of written work; and (4) names, addresses, and telephone numbers of three references to: Visiting Professorship Search Committee, CREES, University of Michigan, Suite 4668, 1080 South University Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1106; FAX: 734-763-4765. Screening by a committee consisting of scholars in Russian and East European Studies and from the relevant professional school(s) will begin July 1, 2000 and will continue until the position is filled. For further information, please e-mail [email protected]. The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer.
