"Children's Response to the Aral Sea Problem"

in Nukus in August 1999

Perzent, the Karakalpak Center for Reproductive Health and Environment, believes that despite numerous discussions about the fate of the Aral Sea, one segment of the local citizenry has not been consulted--children, who make up 40% of the region's population. With this in mind, Perzent organized an ecological summer camp for children from throughout Central Asia at Lake Issyk-Kul, with support from Save the Children Fund in Sweden and the U.K. One outcome of the camp was the establishment of a Children's Environmental Network in Central Asia with coordinating groups in each country. Another was the development of plans for the conference in 1999.

The conference will be organized and managed by children. Perzent is currently looking for partners--organizations with experience working with children--to participate in the conference and share their experience and ideas. A planning workshop will be held in Tashkent in late March or early April, 1999.
