University of Essex--Scholarships in Human Rights Studies 2000/2001Purpose
OSI/FCO Chevening/Essex Scholarships in Human Rights Studies is a scholarship program which will enable suitably qualified students from eligible countries to pursue taught postgraduate programmes within the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Essex. The two programmes offered are the MA in the Theory and Practice of Human Rights and the LLM in International Human Rights LawEligible Countries
The scholarships are open to applicants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.Application Information
You can get application forms, together with information about the courses from the address of your nearest Soros Foundation or Educational Advising Centre. The deadline for applications is 31 January 2000.Criteria
Applicants should:Selection
- be nationals of and normally resident in one of the selected countries at the time of applying for the award, and are expected to return to their home countries; applicants who are temporarily out of the country at the time of application (for a total period of less than 3 consecutive months) may be treated as being resident.
- already hold (or expect to hold by the time of taking up the award) a first degree with good grades
- normally have relevant practical experience
- have passed a TOEFL (ITP) test at an appropriate level by the time of taking up an award;
- normally not have already spent a full academic year or more studying in a university outside Mongolia, Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
All the applications will be sent to the Human Rights Centre. They will be considered by selectors for the programmes who will prepare a short-list of applicants who will be invited for interview. By the end of March applicants will be informed as to whether they have been invited for interview and English language tests. It is expected that these will take place in late April / May. It is hoped to inform all applicants by the end of June as to whether they have been successful, or not.Financial Terms
Each award will provide for payment of academic tuition fees, examination fees, a monthly stipend for living expenses sufficient for a single student, and other agreed allowances including one return economy airfare. No financial support or special provisions are provided for dependents or family members.Further Information
