Program Associate- Network Women's Program
Date: February 15, 2000The Open Society Institute is a private operating and grantmaking foundation that promotes the development of open societies around the world. OSI develops and implements a variety of US-based and international programs in the areas of educational, social and legal reform; and OSI encourages public debate and policy alternatives in complex and often controversial fields. OSI is part of an informal network of more than 30 autonomous nonprofit foundations and other organizations created and funded by philanthropist George Soros in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Haiti, and South Africa, as well as in the United States.
The Network Women's program was created in 1997, with a mission to encourage, promote and initiate gender-inclusive projects which seek to:
In 2000, we are focusing on the following areas: Violence against Women; Women and Education; Women's Human Rights/Participation in Public Life; Technical Assistance to National Foundations and Network Programs (Gender Integration); Information and Documentation; Roma Women; Women in Post-Conflict Zones.
- Eradicate violations of women's rights;
- Develop non-sexist inclusive policies at the international, regional, national and local levels;
- Raise awareness of issues of gender through education, advocacy and research;
- Promote national, regional and international cooperation and linkages among women's organizations which oppose gender discrimination and work for women's empowerment;
- Support access of the region's women to women's activities internationally and to resources available to countries in transition.
Working under the supervision of the Director of the Network Women's Program, the Program Associate will have specific responsibility for working with the Deputy Director on several program areas; will act as a liaison for the program areas of Violence Against Women and Women's Health, managed out of the Budapest office; will monitor Network processes and events; and will support the development of the Information and Documentation area. The applicant should have an understanding of gender-related issues and issues facing countries in transition, and the ability to quickly become familiar with the entire foundation network.

- Manage several projects
- Policy analysis, tracking Stability Pact & EU Accession processes, as well as international women's processes (e.g. UN)
- Writing and editing program memos and documents
- Help conceptualize and implement Information and Documentation Project
- Oversee nf strategy development communication, documentation and submission of FINAL nf papers for October 1.
- Act as liaison to national foundations, women's program coordinators, network programs, programmatic partners, NGOs, etc.
- Organize international events for the program
- Draft programmatic materials, including calls for grant applications and reports
- Assist when needed with administration of specific programs coordinated by other members of the department staff
- Translation if possible
Salary: Commensurate with experience with full benefits + 4 weeks vacation.
- 3-4 years of foundation/non-profit experience, preferably related to women's/gender issues
- Some educational or work experience with the CEE/fSU region preferred
- Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred
- Excellent oral and written English, knowledge of Russian or other regional language appreciated
- Extensive computer skills and high comfort level with computers (expertise with Microsoft Word and Excel required; experience with databases and the Internet preferred)
- Superior interpersonal, written and organizational skills and ability to compose effective, thoughtful correspondence and policy-oriented reports and briefs
- Ability to effectively manage several simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment;
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Sense of humor
- Sensitivity to diversity, especially in communications with international communities
- Integrity and professional discretion.
