Mercy Corps Seeks Director, Civil Society Initiatives

 

Director will design, manage, and implement Mercy Corps' civil society strategy. This program leads Mercy Corps' efforts to promote and incorporate principles of civil society in all of its international work. The program also develops and implements tools and techniques for assisting local groups and individual citizens in increasing their level of participation in local decision-making, promote accountability, and establish avenues that promote peaceful change. Minimum 8 years experience in relief, development, or civil society program administration and supervision.

Requires: Masters degree with an emphasis relating to civil society, such as community development, international studies, human rights, conflict management, or democracy and governance. Well-developed ability to conceptualize and actualize ideas. Ability to lead and manage a diverse and disparate civil society team and field-based projects. Ability to closely collaborate with headquarters and the Civil Society Program Manager in Portland, Oregon. Superb communication (speaking, writing) and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to provide leadership and to work cooperatively with others. Experience in proposal development. Established relationships with US Government, UN, and private donors. Extensive network of individuals and organizations engaged in civil society and related activities. Experience working closely with indigenous NGOs. Knowledge of conflict management, capacity building, advocacy, and human rights and their field applications. Excellent organization skills and attention to detail. Ability to administer US Government/other donor grants in compliance with requirements. Experience in budget analysis, planning, and monitoring. Willingness to travel. Ability to speak Spanish, Bosnian, and/or other languages a plus. Experience in training design and conduct a plus. Experience in survey methodologies a plus.
