The Strengthening Democratic Institutions Project at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University currently has 2 job openings.The Strengthening Democratic Institutions Project (SDI) works to catalyze support for three great transformations underway in Russia, Ukraine and the other republics of the former Soviet Union: to sustainable democracies, free market economies, and cooperative international relations. The Project seeks to understand Western stakes in these transformations, identify strategies for advancing Western interests, and encourage initiatives that increase the likelihood of success. It provides targeted intellectual and technical assistance to governments, international agencies, private institutions, and individuals seeking to facilitate these three great transformations.
Job Openings:
1) Staff Assistant: Provides primary administrative and some basic research support for busy office dealing with reform in the former Soviet Union. Duties and responsibilities include: assisting in the planning and implementation of events hosted by the Project; assisting with travel arrangements for researchers and for visiting scholars from the former Soviet Union; maintaining contacts database; maintaining computer and office product contracts and repairs; ordering supplies; maintaining administrative files; coordinating office set-up; preparing financial reimbursements and reconciling accounts on monthly basis; tracking events and compiling clippings and updates from Western and Russian press; preparing project's reports for reproduction and coordinating distribution; handling mass mailings and requests for materials; and ensuring basic communications to Russia by email, fax, and telephone. The position reports to the Associate Director of the Project and the Administrative Coordinator.
Requirements: Some college background and broad knowledge of the former Soviet Union desired. 2) Research Assistant: Assists Professor/Director of a major research center on the former Soviet Union's transition to democracy, a market economy, and cooperative international relations. Gathers data and information, researches and writes memos on issues and assists with the preparation of research reports for publication, including tracking Russian economic developments. Helps with classroom preparation and works closely with other members of the research team. Performs related job duties as required.
Requirements: Bachelors or Masters degree; outstanding academic record; excellent written and research skills; ability to work independently and under tight deadlines; background in economics, government, and international affairs; interest in Soviet/Russian studies essential, and in energy and environment issues a plus. Russian language skills and familiarity with Harvard helpful, although not essential.
