The International League for Human Rights, a small non-profit U.S.-based NGO with consultative status at the UN, now in its 59th year, seeks a NIS Program Coordinator to work with the executive director and League affiliates and partners in the NIS region.Responsibilities include managing U.S. travel program as well as local projects, including assistance to lawyers and human rights and democracy groups in Azerbaijan and Belarus; preparation for the UN World Conference Against Racism in Russia and the region; children's rights in Russia; submissions to relevant UN bodies and reporting to OSCE; and related topics. The job is based in New York, with approximately 4 field trips to the NIS region per year, and handling 4-6 training and advocacy delegations from the NIS to the U.S. per year. Other duties include newsletter editing; web-site contribution; translation; preparation of human rights reports for UN, OSCE, Council of Europe; occasional case work.
The preferred candidate will have at minimum:
Candidates must have U.S. citizenship or a green card and be able to cover their own relocation expenses. Candidates must display high self-management ability and team cooperation and be fully competent in computer word-processing, e-mail, Internet, etc. programs. Salary range: $35,000-$40,000 commensurate with experience, with health care and vacation benefits.
- a B.A. in international affairs, political science, journalism, or language and literature;
- excellent spoken and written Russian language ability and excellent English speaking, writing, and editing skills;
- substantial field experience in the CIS and a background in working with NGOs and/or media;
- and a flair for advocacy and campaign work at the local and international level.
