In May 1999, the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) received grants from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State (ECA) to administer the Internet Access and Training Program (IATP) in 10 countries of Eurasia including Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The goal of the IATP is to promote and support democracy, public-private sector partnerships, and civil society by linking the communities of Eurasia to the global information infrastructure. The IATP provides a unique opportunity for alumni of US government exchange and training programs and other target audiences to receive free and open access to and training in the Internet, helping to foster continued information sharing, network building, communication, and collaboration with their American and Eurasian counterparts.
The ECA, together with IREX, is pleased to announce an open competition for the IATP Internet grants program. Alumni of ECA programs and IATP partners are encouraged to apply.
The purpose of the IATP Internet Grants Program is to promote IATP sustainability through the development of local language Internet resources. Awards will average $1,500, but not exceed $5,000, and will allow local alumni and IATP partners the opportunity to create new partnerships and make available Internet resources and materials in local languages; organize training programs or distance learning initiatives; create web sites; and/or conduct any other projects judged to be in the interest of the program goals by the selection committee and/or the ECA and Office of Public Diplomacy.
