Position AnnouncementProgram Officer
Peace And Social Justice Program
Global Civil SocietySummary Description:
Working with the Director of the Governance and Civil Society unit and other Foundation staff, the Program Officer will take responsibility for developing and overseeing the Foundation's program designed to promote and strengthen global civil society - transnational citizen organizing, international NGO networks, and other manifestations of civic activity across national borders. Current grant-making is focused on civil society and globalization, the promotion of 'economic literacy' among NGOs, and strengthening links between grassroots organizations and networks in the countries of the South and the North. The new Program Officer will be required to evaluate these strategies against the changing internal and external context, and suggest priorities for the future.
These priorities are likely to include initiatives that address the systemic questions currently facing 'global civil society': issues of legitimacy, accountability and representation; the practical difficulties of communicating and collaborating democratically across the world; and barriers that make it difficult for civil society organizations in the South to gain access to global regimes and international institutions.
The Program Officer on Global Civil Society will also be expected to play an active role in the development of civil society programming worldwide, providing advice as required to Program Officers in overseas offices and to colleagues elsewhere in the Ford Foundation in New York; sharing in the leadership of Civil Society planning and strategy sessions, research projects and learning groups; and working especially closely with the Program Officers on Civil Society in the USA and on Philanthropy, and with colleagues who work on global civil society initiatives in Human Rights and International Cooperation.
Required Qualifications:
Substantive experience of working in international civil society organizations (either in grassroots citizen organizing across borders, international NGOs, or global civil society networks and federations); an advanced degree in the social sciences, law or public policy; excellent interpersonal skills and sound analytical and writing abilities; a teamwork orientation and ability to interact effectively with colleagues from diverse disciplines and perspectives; strong conceptual, organizational, financial analysis, and oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge and experience of global civic involvement in international regimes and institutions; a proven track record of research and writing on global civil society.
Salary is based on experience and the Foundation's commitment to internal equity. A generous benefits package is included.
To apply for employment, please send resume, cover letter, and brief writing sample to Ms. S. Gordon at the above address by 23 June 2000.
