CIVICUS is a six-year-old global nonprofit organization whose mission is to strengthen citizen action and civil society throughout the world. CIVICUS works with its network of members and partners to mobilize citizens to help nurture the foundation, growth, protection, and resourcing of citizen action through the world and especially in areas where participatory democracy, freedom of association of citizens, and their funds for public benefit are threatened. CIVICUS has more than 540 members in 98 countries. There are 27 members on the Board of Directors, coming from 23 different countries; there are six regional entities; and there are currently five full-time staff members and several interns. The secretariat office is in Washington, DC. The work of the organization is accomplished through a decentralized global board and secretariat staff (some located in other countries), and through its regional entities and member/partner network.CIVICUS seeks to fill two senior positions, namely Chief Operating Officer (position to become vacant in June) and Director of Development/Fundraising (new position).
Chief Operating Officer
CIVICUS seeks a seasoned manager to direct the day-to-day operations of the organization, working in close partnership with CIVICUS's Secretary General/CEO Kumi Naidoo. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) must be resourceful, self-motivated, and with substantial experience. This is an excellent opportunity for a proven manager who is skilled at turning vision into action, and doing so in a highly organized, effective way. This is a hands-on job that requires tremendous dexterity and energy. The COO is responsible for supervising the organization's programs, including conferences, membership, and publications; as well as directing the organization's operations including financial, human resources, information system and knowledge management and day-to-day office management. The COO assists the Secretary General/CEO and other staff members with fundraising. The COO works out of the CIVICUS secretariat office in Washington, DC.
Director of Development/Fundraising
CIVICUS seeks a high-energy, motivated, experienced individual to manage CIVICUS's development and fundraising activities. The Director of Development implements the fast-paced, global fundraising activities to advance the organization's programs and relationships with a global board of directors, staff, members, and partners. The job involves assisting the Secretary General/CEO and the Chief Operating Officer by researching prospective donors and writing grant proposals; preparing narrative and financial statements for grant reports; and ensuring compliance with individual grant requirements. Because CIVICUS is in the process of decentralizing its global secretariat, the position does not require the candidate to be located in Washington, DC.
