Meeting of CIVICUS Members in Europe

 

The next CIVICUS World Assembly will take place in Manila, The Philippines on 21-24 September, 1999 under the title "Towards a New Civil Society: The Changing Roles of CSOs, Government, and Business". Various working documents have already been circulated among CIVICUS member organisations by the Washington Secretariat and on the European level preparatory work has also been undertaken by the EuroCIVICUS Working Group.

In order to co-ordinate this work and finalise European preparations, it was agreed to organise a meeting of CIVICUS members in Europe. The offer of the European House to host this consultation in Budapest was accepted.

1. The state of CIVICUS affairs: Preparations for the Manila World Assembly Initiative to develop a Global Citizen Commitment Kumi Naidoo, Secretary General and CEO, CIVICUS

2. European preparations for Manila
a. EuroCIVICUS Message to Manila (3rd draft) Policy Development Paper Stuart Etherington, Chief Executive, NCVO
b. Proposals for break out and/or affinity groups during the World Assembly
c. European participation at the World Assembly Financial support to Central and Eastern European civil society organisations

3. EuroCIVICUS in progress
a. working programme for the coming period
b. location and form of a European secretariat; regional "antennas" Mikl=F3s Barab=E1s, Director, European House
c. constitution of an Advisory Board of EuroCIVICUS

4. Nomination of young Europeans to the CIVICUS Board of Directors

The consultation will be followed by an informal reception offered by the Department of Civil Relations of the Prime Minister's Office of Hungary.

A special grant of the CIVICUS Board makes it possible for participants of the consultation not to pay registration fees and free accommodation is offered in double rooms in Hotel Mercure Buda for 1 night (12 June). Single room supplement is 27 Euro. A limited amount of travel grant is also available. For further information please contact us.

The consultation is preceeded by a major international NGO conference to be held also in Budapest on 10-12 June under the title "Dialogue for the Europe of the Future - European Integration and Civil Society". You will find enclosed its programme and other relevant information.
