Exchange Program for Secondary School Social Studies Teachers
in Russia and Ukraine

Partners in Education Exchange Program

Funded by the United States Information Agency (USIA) Administered by the American Council for Collaboration in Education and Language Study (ACCELS)

The Freedom Support Act funded Partners in Education Program (PIE) supports democratic and educational reform in Russia and Ukraine by advancing the development of civics education in NIS school systems. Over the course of two semesters (Spring 1998 and Fall 1998) ninety secondary school social studies educators and administrators from 10 oblasts in Russia and Ukraine will participate in six week community based training and internship programs at U.S. secondary schools.

The program will send approximately eight teachers and one administrator from each of the participating Ukrainian and Russia oblasts to participating U.S. school districts, and will allow the visiting participants to observe and contribute to their host school's curriculum. Participants will be offered home stays, and each participant will be paired with a faculty mentor at the host institution. The program also includes a civics education workshop.

Recruitment in Russia will be limited to educators and administrators from the following oblasts: Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Samara, Sverdlovsk. Recruitment in Ukraine will be limited to educators and administrators from the following oblasts: Kharkiv, Odessa. Russian teachers in these oblasts are encouraged to apply.

There will also be the opportunity for the participating U.S school districts to send administrators to their Russian and Ukrainian partner's schools. Up to twenty administrators from the U.S. will be invited on a two week program.
