Applications are invited for Fellowships at the Central and East
European Economic Research Center (CEEERC), Warsaw, Poland.
CEEERC is co-sponsored by the Department of Economics of Warsaw
University and Columbia University. The program provides an
opportunity to scholars from the post-communist countries of
Central and Eastern Europe to engage in full-time research in
cooperation with Western economists. All the work at the Center
is carried out in English. Funding is assured through the end of
calendar year 1998.
CEEERC Fellows will reside in Warsaw. They will be given office
space, computer facilities, and free access to the library and
other amenities of Warsaw University as well as of other
cooperating institutions of higher learning in the region.
Terms of the Fellowships
Fellowships will be granted for periods of up to one year, and
may be renewed for a second year. Each Fellow will receive a
monthly stipend of $800 to $1,200 depending on qualifications.
Fellows from outside the Warsaw area will be provided housing and
a travel allowance. During the period of tenure, Fellows may not
engage in outside work.
Center Fellows may qualify for long-term contracts for teaching
positions sponsored by the Central European University (CEU) in
Budapest.
Who May Apply
CEEERC invites applications for pre- and post-doctoral research
fellowships from citizens of post-Communist countries. Candidates
who did their Ph.D. work at Western universities, as well
as holders of Central and East European doctoral degrees in
economics and in related fields are eligible.
The pre-doctoral candidates must have completed all the Ph.D.
requirements except for their dissertation, and they will be
expected to utilize their time at the Center for work on an
approved thesis topic. Holders of doctoral degrees will be free
to pursue work leading to publication in article or monograph
form.
Research Fields
The Center's research will focus on issues of particular importance in
Central and Eastern Europe. This definition encompasses
empirical as well as theoretical studies of a broad array of
macro and microeconomic problems, including, but not confined to,
such diverse areas as questions of employment and unemployment,
social security, public health, the role and transformation of
financial institutions, regional integration, and the transformation
of agriculture. The one requirement is methodological rigor:
purely descriptive projects are unacceptable.
Cooperation with Western Scholars
CEEERC will give to the Central and East European Fellows an
opportunity for close collaboration with scholars from the West.
The faculty members of the Columbia University-Warsaw University
Cooperative Program in Economics will serve as the Center's
Resident Scholars. In addition, the Center will be visited on a
regular basis by Western scholars connected with the Central
European University and its affiliated institutions. The Visiting
Scholars will keep abreast of the Center's ongoing work, and
provide technical counsel to the Fellows.
