Lermontov was born in Moscow in 1814. The poet lived in the Tarkhany village, situated near Penza, until he was 12 years old.
The best part of his short life was spent there. Having been killed in a duel in 1841, Lermontov was buried in Kavkaz. But he did not stay there forever. His grandmother, E.A. Arsenev, was the lady/landowner of Tarkhany, and she saw to it that Lermontov's ashes were returned to Tarkhany in April of 1842.
The ashes of the poet were put to rest in a grave in a small chapel near the Mikhail Arkhangel (Archangel Michael) church. The Mikhail Lermontov Museum was subsequently opened in Tarkhany.
