The Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (HCLU) is a non-profit organization, which was formed in July 1994. Since then it has firmely established itself among Hungary's few human rights organizations. It works independently of the Government and of any political parties.HCLU aims to promote in Hungary the case of the fundamental rights and principles laid down by the Constitution and by the internationa conventions. It gives pride of place to the protection of personal freedoms, of human dignity, and of privacy. Concentration is on fields where violations of law are most likely to occur and where victims are especially exposed. The following topics are in the focus of attention:
- The protection of personal data and securing of access to information of public interest.
- The rights of patients.
- The rights of drugs users.
- The coercive powers and actions of the authoroties
